Welcome to Baishakhi Mela Sunday 10th May 2009

Tower Hamlets Council proudly presents a Baishakhi Mela in Banglatown Brick Lane

Tower Hamlets Council is organising a Baishakhi Mela in Banglatown Brick Lane (Sunday 10 May), and has secured a stellar line-up of international and local performers to appear on the main stage in Weavers Fields.

Taking place from 12  noon the seven hour entertainment bonanza which celebrates the Bengali New Year concludes with the phenomenal Mumtaz Begum. She will take to the stage after the likes of Selim Choudhury, Nukul Kumar Bishash and Kajol Dewan have worked the crowds. She will entertain the audience with her unique singing voice which hits all the right notes - especially the high ones.

The East End’s latest performing sensation to follow in the footsteps of chart topping rapper Dizzy Rascal is Mumzy. The British Bengali MC and DJ will be on the main stage in the afternoon and is sure to attract the younger generation.

And Grand Union Bangla, a 20 piece orchestra, fresh from a tour of Bangladesh will appear on stage with a host of guest singers and musicians including Lucy Rahman, Yousuf Ali Khan, Shahdat Hossain Khan, Kala Miah, Shumi and Meherun Kanak.

The youth stage in Allen Gardens also boasts a fantastic line-up which includes local artists and dance groups performing throughout the afternoon, alongside rare east London appearances by State of Bengal and Arun Ghosh.

Both stages are jam packed with entertainment and have full line ups. Auditions are still taking place for the youth programme on the Allen Gardens Stage
